id=\"tab-6f5e613c3358bd6f4f6\">\n<p>The Abbey of S\u00e9nanque was founded on the 9<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0of the Calends of July 1148 (23<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0June) by a dozen of Cistercians monks coming from the monastery of Mazan, located in Ard\u00e8che. Our-Lady of S\u00e9nanque was the fourth Cistercian abbey founded in Provence, after Le Thoronet, Aiguebelle and Silvacane.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>The abbey belongs to a powerful monastic order, hold by the aura of Saint Bernard.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>At the foundation of Senanque, the Cistercians count more than 350 monasteries all over Europe. Based on a solid organization, they develop a specific architectural style, immediately recognizable.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-b887a35fa7b1426d667\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1178\" href=\"#tab-b887a35fa7b1426d667\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1178<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1178\" id=\"tab-b887a35fa7b1426d667\">\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>In S\u00e9nanque, the community took possession of a 1 kilometer long and 300 meters wide valley. Despite the narrowness of the location, it perfectly corresponded to the instructions of the Cistercian order which specify than monasteries cannot be built in towns, villages or rural houses (chapter 9 of the\u00a0<em>Summa Cartae Caritatis<\/em>).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>Saint Benedict asked for monasteries to possess all the necessary things to live: water, a mill, a garden, a bakery, etc. in order that monks do not need to go outside, which is not beneficial for their souls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-3925ab75dfd2d46fe19\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1220\" href=\"#tab-3925ab75dfd2d46fe19\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1220<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1220\" id=\"tab-3925ab75dfd2d46fe19\">\n<p>In 1220, the abbey was completed, a construction site of almost 60 years.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-3d1cb00d10d409335b7\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-thesenancole\" href=\"#tab-3d1cb00d10d409335b7\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">The senancole<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-thesenancole\" id=\"tab-3d1cb00d10d409335b7\">\n<p>The valley of Senanque presents all the materials needed for the construction as stone and wood. It\u2019s isolated, with cultivable lands, pastures and especially, a river: the Senancole.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>During the XII<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, the climate, fresh and rainy, was different than nowadays: the river S\u00e9nancole was sufficient for the needs of the founding monks. Witnesses of that ancient strength, some remains are still visible at several places of the valley.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \">\n<div class=\"wpb_wrapper\">\n<p>The name of the abbey is probably linked to this river: coming from the latin words\u00a0<em>sana aqua<\/em>\u00a0(pure water). This was the beginning of a period of discord and violence and the properties of the abbey couldn\u2019t be conserved, the incomes decreased and the vocations reduced. Only three brothers were still living in S\u00e9nanque in 1439.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-59f7fadd93ae969b6a9\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1444\" href=\"#tab-59f7fadd93ae969b6a9\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1444<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1444\" id=\"tab-59f7fadd93ae969b6a9\">\n<p>Dom Berenger Borgarelli, the abbot in 1444, described a catastrophic situation: there were few vocations, the monastery was damaged and the incomes were at the lowest because of the wars which were devastated not only for S\u00e9nanque, but for all the area.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-2bf9e1f4d97066f3cab\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1544\" href=\"#tab-2bf9e1f4d97066f3cab\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1544<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1544\" id=\"tab-2bf9e1f4d97066f3cab\">\n<p>Presages of the French Wars of Religion, in 1544 an armed group of Waldensian from Cabri\u00e8res rised up and attacked S\u00e9nanque. The south part of the monastery was destroyed by fire (the refectory, the fountain in the cloister and the buildings for the lay brothers) and the main part of the archives was lost. Twelve monks would have been hung. In order to protect S\u00e9nanque, the new owner decided to remove every exterior religious signs: he took off the cross at the top of the church and the 3 bells, he also destroyed the coat of arms on aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1854-1857\" id=\"tab-3728ee7554950be64e8\">\n<p>In 1854, a community of monks moved in S\u00e9nanque.<\/p>\n<p>The 29<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0April 1857, Mrs de Pluvinal, the owner of the abbey, sold the buildings to the community, represented by its abbot Dom Barnouin. He then started some important works of restauration. New parts were built: for the novices above the river S\u00e9nancole, workshops in the south part and a monastic guest house in front of the church. Thanks to the numerous vocations, the community extended to 72 brothers.<\/p>\n<p>During that same period, Jean Leonard (1815-1895) entered at the abbey of S\u00e9nanque and became the master of novices. He became after that abbot of the abbey of Fontfroide which is truly seen as a place of charity and hospitality. The words and the writings of Jean Leonard influenced personalities like Saint Therese of the Child Jesus, Dom Chautard and Saint Antoine Marie Claret. His beatification process is currently in progress.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-0f7c159c07219c01aca\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1880-1889\" href=\"#tab-0f7c159c07219c01aca\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1880 - 1889<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1880-1889\" id=\"tab-0f7c159c07219c01aca\">\n<p>However, the 5<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0November 1881, the police evicted the monks because of the laws of the 3<sup>rd<\/sup>\u00a0French Republic: most of the monks moved to the abbeys of Fontfroide and L\u00e9rins. Three brothers were allowed to stay in S\u00e9nanque to look after the monastery on condition of abandoning orders.<\/p>\n<p>In 1882, the abbey was sold again as a public property for 15\u00a0000 francs.<\/p>\n<p>In 1889, the monks came back discreetly at the abbey without contestation of the owner. At the beginning of the XX<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0century, authorities reacted against that installation: the community is evicted once again in 1903. From that moment, the monastery stayed open to all: one\u2019s can still see today graffitis on several medieval walls.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-41e9ad902059114f639\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1905-1926\" href=\"#tab-41e9ad902059114f639\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1905 - 1926<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1905-1926\" id=\"tab-41e9ad902059114f639\">\n<p>The abbey is sold the 27<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0June 1905 to an annuitant of Cavaillon who let a farmer live in S\u00e9nanque. The 17<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0March 1921, the State ordered the classification of the oldest part of the buildings as Historical Monument.<\/p>\n<p>In May 1926, a dozen of monks moved to S\u00e9nanque. The monastery became again the property of a community.<\/p>\n<\/div><div class=\"nav fusion-mobile-tab-nav\"><ul class=\"nav-tabs\" role=\"tablist\"><li role=\"presentation\"><a class=\"tab-link\" data-toggle=\"tab\" role=\"tab\" aria-controls=\"tab-fe77249fd6bd2e5931e\" aria-selected=\"false\" tabindex=\"-1\" id=\"mobile-fusion-tab-1969-1988\" href=\"#tab-fe77249fd6bd2e5931e\"><h4 class=\"fusion-tab-heading\">1969 - 1988<\/h4><\/a><\/li><\/ul><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane fade fusion-clearfix\" role=\"tabpanel\" tabindex=\"0\" aria-labelledby=\"fusion-tab-1969-1988\" id=\"tab-fe77249fd6bd2e5931e\">\n<p>In March 1969, the five last monks living in S\u00e9nanque were not able to handle the heavy burden of taking care of the abbey: they decided to move to their mother-house of L\u00e9rins.<\/p>\n<p>The abbot of L\u00e9rins decided to rent for 30 years the buildings to Mr Paul Berliet who promised to restore the monastery. The lease is signed on the 24<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0October 1969 and several campaigns of restauration started. This agreement was encouraged by the Minister of Culture, Andr\u00e9 Malraux, who was determined to save monuments in danger.<\/p>\n<p>At the beginning of the 1980\u2019s, the monastic community of L\u00e9rins was big enough to expand in Italy (monastery of Pra\u2019d\u2019Mill) and considered to return to S\u00e9nanque. The emphyteutic lease is not finished yet but Paul Berliet gave back the abbey to the brothers. The 26<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0November 1988, a part of the Cistercian community of L\u00e9rins went to Senanque.<\/p>\n<p>Today, the community still follows the rule of Saint Benedict and lives thanks to the work of the brothers. Cultivation of lavandin, of olive trees, production of honey, visits of the abbey, hospitality and monastic shop permit the monks to live but also to maintain and restore the
